From reflection to community identity: highlights from workshop #4 of the Community of Cities

On September 24th, the Community of Cities held its fourth and final workshop of the Eyes Hearts Hands project, gathering city representatives from across Europe to reflect on their shared journey.

Unlike previous sessions, which focused on refining the Decision Support System (DSS) tool, this final meeting took a broader, forward-looking approach. Using the Ikigai framework, participants explored four questions: What inspires us? What are we good at? What challenges can we help address? What do we need to sustain our role?

This exercise helped cities define their own “urban ikigai,” a synthesis of values, strengths, contributions and sustainability. Each city articulated its unique role within the network:

  • Izmir (Turkey): integrating sustainable energy, cultural identity, and community co-design into a transferable model.
  • Maia (Portugal): creating a sustainable living environment through social engagement and co-creation.
  • Kozani (Greece): applying a multidisciplinary approach and working with citizens to meet local needs.
  • Copenhagen (Denmark): advancing recycling and reuse systems, public consultations, and serving as an international hub to connect stakeholders in urban sustainability.
  • Osijek (Croatia): developing participatory urban spaces that reflect community voices.

Across these reflections, common themes emerged: equity, climate, mobility, participation and heritage transformation. The session highlighted that the Community of Cities has grown into more than just a testing ground for tools: it has become a network with complementary strengths and a shared commitment to sustainable transformation.

What’s next?
With this fourth meeting, the Community of Cities concludes its initial phase of co-creating and testing the DSS tool, which is now completed. The journey, however, does not end here: momentum will continue through the Irresistible Cities Lab, ensuring that the network evolves as a lasting resource for sustainable urban transformation.
